Goals… or fear of what?

Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?

Goals in life.

Do we need them or can we point our noses north, south, east or west and then let fate take over?

Over the years I have had much solicited and unsolicited advice about goal setting. Quite honestly, the goal setting agenda and its footmen and women have taken up far too much of my time, creating awful quandaries, which, almost always lead to disappointment when the penny eventually drops, only after killing myself doing something I hate at a low level for a prolonged period of time, I discover that it will never change the fact that there are only so many astronaut or pro-golf positions available.

I still don’t really know what I want to “be” when I grow up. I find drafting my annual SMART goals at work painful and when all is said and done, meaningless. I am a believer in setting certain deadlines, but that differs in that you have to get there whether you want to or not and so the self discipline is on me and the actions fully in my own lackadaisical control or face the consequences.

I’m also a spider mind and take multiple enthusiasms all of the time, mark my words – a spot of unpredictability keeps things interesting. I don’t know why the broad brusher approach tries to push us towards structure as a form of social control and inner red-tape.

No, that’s it. I am done with goal setting. My unsolicited advice to you: unleash those socially normative shackles and live in the now for a bit. Rip up those SMART goals.
