The Last Thing

Tell us about the last thing you got excited about.

The last thing I was excited about was a recent family trip to Liverpool, England. Liverpool is around a four hour drive from home and is a city I have always wanted to visit with its long held reputation for vibrancy, music, historic working class camaraderie and – of course – for being the birthplace of the legendary Beatles.

So off we set, a tour of the football stadium pre-booked for my son and an open mind about what we would find.

We stayed in quite a fancy city centre chain hotel thanks to the gazillions of loyalty points my other half has accumulated with work. Dropping our bags in our room; we headed off into the summer evening.

As most of you know, people watching is one of my thangs, and Liverpool, was just fabulous. As a long-standing Irish and thereafter Atlantic facing port city, I found many similar cultural traits and city scapes as I have observed in other thronging cities like Belfast, Newcastle and Glasgow. A skyline of churches and cathedrals, punctuated with modern glass sky high buildings where dock warehouses have been demolished and given a make over. The cherries on the top of Liverpool’s cityscape can be found on the banks of the river Mersey, are “the three Graces” a trio of gorgeous mercantile buildings standing side by side, the most famous of which is The Liver Building.

And the people! We were treated to a Liverpudlian wedding in the hotel, spilling over throughout the weekend from the night before, right through to the morning after when spirits were significantly quieter and needing of breakfast caffeine.

Otherwise, there were ladies tottering around in silky pjs and hair rollers the night before, a fight in the lobby at about 6pm, and fantastic cheer, fake tan and swagger in equal measure, all punctuated by the famous and fabulous Scouse accent.

Oh and the Beatles museum was great too!

I would highly recommend a visit.
